Most collectors are familiar with the Luger pistol – it is one of the most iconic handgun designs ever made. Those who have an interest in these guns will probably know about both the standard Army model (the P.08) & the long-barreled Artillery model, with its shoulder stock & snail drum magazine accessories.

What a lot fewer people know about is the third major German military version of the Luger; the P04 Naval version. The Germany Navy was looking to replace its long-obsolete Reichsrevolvers at the same time the Army was, but while the Army was also dealing with the expense of adopting the new Mauser 98 rifles, the Navy needed far fewer pistols & had a budget on hand to buy them. They took the recent German Army & Swiss Army trials reports at face value & adopted the 1904 pattern Luger in 1904.

These pistols had 6 inch long barrels (compared to the 4 inches on Army models), rear sights adjustable for either 100 or 200 meters & they came with shoulder stocks for making the guns into convenient carbines. They were purchased in batches starting in 1904 (although the first deliveries took almost 2 years) & ran through the end of World War I.

The Luger P.04 Kriegsmarine pistol is one of the rarest variants of the Luger & is one of the  best. There are two main variants of the German Kriegsmarine Luger, the P04 & the P14. The two are almost identical but the early P.04 has a grip safety catch whereas the P.14 does not & the P.14 also has flat checkering on the toggle.

The Luger P.04 was the first Luger pistol adopted by a German military force.

The German Navy Lugers are immediately recognisable to the trained eye & were fitted with a 150mm (5.9″) barrel with a rear-sight that was adjustable for 100 meters or 200 metres. Both the P.04 & the later P.14 were slotted for a shoulder stock to enable its use as a handy light carbine making it ideal for boarding enemy ships or repelling boarders with its semi-automatic capability & 8 round magazine.

Of those original Luger P.04 & P.14 pistols there are very few survivors in original condition. This is partly because they were used in the First World War & that took its terrible toll. But also because after the war the terms of the Treaty of Versailles required that the barrels of all Luger pistols be shortened to 100mm (3.9″). Because of the rarity of the original pistols auction prices for a good one are steadily increasing, making this an excellent investment for the astute collector.

If you are looking to acquire a Luger P.04 Navy pistol for your collection, this may be your chance so if you think this is for you, don’t hesitate.

We are offering this rifle as a collectable piece of military history & acknowledge the grievous atrocities committed by the Nazi regime & some of its military, particularly toward the peoples of occupied territory & the Jewish population in Europe. In no way do we condone or glorify the Nazi regime which must be remembered for the vile stain on human history that it was.

We think we have described it accurately & correctly but do not claim to be infallible so if we have got anything wrong, it is unintentional & are happy for feedback from people who know more than we do.

Whilst we check these out for serviceability, the warranty has expired & this is sold on an ‘as is’ basis. As with all used guns, we recommend you have this checked by a suitably qualified person prior to shooting.

We have a pretty unique refund policy on our collectable guns whereby we will refund your money if it is not as described when you receive it. Just let us know before you decide to send it back.
