Description

For the astute collector!

Recently imported from the US & offered for sale is this rare fully matching numbered early war K98k made by Daimler-Puch-Steyr with the hard to find 660 code on the receiver.

Collectors will know these 660 code rifles were the first of the first Steyr made 98k’s & made in small numbers as the Steyr production of Kar98k’s was limited because they were focussed on manufacturing other items deemed essential for wartime production & there were other manufacturers making them already. Before the war, Steyr made around only 1,000 rifles per year.

In 1941 the Steyr production code changed from “660” to “bnz” which continued to be used until the end of the war. The top of the receiver ring of this rifle is marked 660 over 1940, the right side is marked with Waffenamt proofs which were the acceptance codes for Steyr & the left side is marked with the Nazi firing proof (Nazi Eagle or ‘Reich Adler’) & the serial number. Uniquely, these early Steyrs were known to not have ‘Mod. 98’ marked on the receiver.

All visible matching numbers include barrel, receiver, complete bolt (including extractor & safety), floor plate, front sight & rear sight. Even the screws on the floor plate are correctly numbered, as is the stock which also has numerous Waffenamts & sundry Nazi eagle markings.

It looks all correct including the laminate stock with the correct flat butt plate (also numbered to this rifle), milled barrel bands, floorplate & trigger guard plus it retains the original cleaning rod.

This is a stunning example of an early war K98k rifle made when the Germans were still building high quality guns & before the Germans began to introduce changes to production techniques to save time, materials & money.

These rifles are highly sought after by knowledgeable collectors. They are scarce & rarely ever seen this nice, let alone all matching!

These 660 marked early rifles were unique as they were made up of Steyr made parts & also some parts from the captured Radom plant in Poland.  These Polish/Nazi rifles are highly sought after by collectors due to there unique history.

It presents as all original as can be seen in the photos. The wood is excellent with minimal marks & it has plenty of the original blue still present as can be seen in the photos.

The bore is excellent, shiny with lots of rifling clearly visible, so definitely a shooter! The muzzle will not accept a PPU ‘8mm Mauser’ round, as per photo meaning the bore is still tight & within spec.

Do your own research & you will see that this great example of a rare & hard to find matching numbered Kar98k would make an excellent addition to any serious Mauser collection or a great start to one.
