Description

This old war horse is in surprisingly good condition for a 104 year old.

Made in 1916, markings show this underwent the FTR process at the Lithgow factory in Sep 1944 & several observable upgrades made at the time reflect this.

The magazine cut-off has been removed plus newer style front sight ears & bolt cocking piece are a legacy of this refurbishment.

The metal work is in excellent condition with no sign of pitting or damage.

The wood appears to have been replaced during this FTR & has done its job in protecting the rifle from bangs & dings, showing a life of service, just not hard service as it is pretty good.

After WW1 it was issued to Victoria CMF (Army Reserve) as indicated by the 3MD (3rd Military District) stamp & the lined out inventory number on the receiver.

The bore is excellent & the barrel is unnumbered, indicating this also was replaced at that time.

This is an excellent example of an early Lithgow that likely saw service in both WW1 & WW2 then was refurbished back to 1st grade serviceability for war use.

This would make an excellent choice for a service rifle shooter whilst being a highly collectible rifle in its own right with a verifiable Aussie military provenance.
