Description
Recently imported from Germany, this mint & rare rifle is available for sale to the Australian collector market for the first time.
Czechoslovakia was the world’s largest small arms maker in the 1920’s & 1930’s & were known to make fine arms which were exported around the globe. The Vz.24 battle rifle is a bolt-action carbine, designed & produced at the BRNO /CZ factory from 1924 to 1942 as the main battle rifle of Czechoslovakia.
Known as the ‘Czech Mauser’, it was developed from the German Mauser Gewehr 98 line & features a very similar bolt design. The rifle was designed in Czechoslovakia shortly after World War I, to replace the VZ 98/22, also a Czech designed derivative of the Gewehr 98.
The Vz.24 followed the trend at the time of armies transitioning to shorter rifles & featured a 590 mm (23.2 in) barrel which was considered more handy than the 740 mm (29.1 in) Gewehr 98 barrel & chambered in 7.92×57mm Mauser like its predecessors.
The Vz.24 equipped the Czech Army & was the mainstay battle rifle used to resist the Nazi invasion. Germany acquired hundreds of thousands of the rifles in 1939 when they occupied Czechoslovakia & pressed them into service under the designation “Gewehr 24(t)” known to many as the G.24. During the occupation, production of the rifles continued until 1942, when the factories were converted to the German-designed Karabiner 98k (K-98).
This particular rifle is certainly pre WW2 & by the looks of it was not used for more than being carried prior to the German invasion which didn’t last long, let’s face it…it didn’t see much combat before being stashed away from the Nazi’s.
We think this because German captured Vz.24’s were either issued to 3rd line troops on static guard duty (think Atlantic Wall) or turned into G.24’s at the Styer factory in Austria. This rifle didn’t go into Nazi German service as it has none of the usual German acceptance stamps.
Visible numbers match including the stock, only the main floor plate has been replaced & is a differing number, most likely in service.
This is a very rare rifle in this condition & extremely collectable.
This rifle would make a unique addition to your Mauser or WW2 battle rifle collection or perhaps the start of one?
